The data is a valuable asset that is often hard and expensive to deal with because of the way software is built. Data quickly becomes part of the technical debt; Application-specific data aside, it is hard to deal with structured and unstructured data that evolves over the time along with providing options to export / migrate and means to master. That is because data has traditionally been a follower (second-class) to the application-specific requirements. Knowledge of what the data is and how to interpret it is often hard coded to the application itself; hence the most common approach of data backup and exchange is in the form of “dumb” text files (Database dumps, logs, CSV …etc).

This presentation gives a new perspective, based on solid experience in building systems, in which data is upgraded to become a first-class citizen; by factoring out the mastered version of the data in a self–contained and describing form to the point where it would become agnostic to the specific application or implementation. This brings all sorts of advantages (and some disadvantages of course); all to be covered in the presentation.
